Square Enix to Double Down on Blockchain and Autonomous Content

Square Enix is redoubling its efforts to incorporate blockchain technology into its games in the not-too-distant future, according to a press release. The corporation, which had previously stated that it intended to make a significant foray into the blockchain gaming sector, now appears to be interested in utilizing similar capabilities to establish self-sustaining economies in virtual reality environments.

In a recent interview with Yahoo News, Yosuke Matsuda, president of Square Enix, highlighted the tradeoff that he and the company must make in order to deliver some of these experiences in the future. User-generated content (UGC) is extremely important to Matsuda, and he is firm in his belief that authors of such content should be directly compensated with some form of game currency. He made the following statement:

By utilizing technologies such as blockchain instead of relying on good intentions, if incentives are given to those who have contributed to the development, there is a possibility that content with innovative fun will be born from the user’s ideas.

This incorporation of user-generated content would also allegedly aid in the creation of games that are able to thrive even after the original producers' support has ended, if there is sufficient interest from third-party authors.

Not the First Time

This is not the first time that Matsuda has shared his thoughts on the future of gaming and the role of Bitcoin in society. According to Matsuda, in a new year's letter published in January, blockchain has the potential to transform the way players and builders may participate in gaming experiences in a more engaging manner.

Matsuda provided the following advice on how to attain this immersed engagement:

It is blockchain-based tokens that will enable this. By designing viable token economies into our games, we will enable self-sustaining game growth.

However, when it comes to building a game based on popular properties such as Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts that incorporates blockchain and token concepts, Square Enix has been fairly conservative. In reality, Naoki Yoshida, the director and producer of Final Fantasy XIV, stated in February that there was no chance of NFTs being included in the game.

Other Japanese businesses, such as Sega, have also shown ambivalence about NFTs in the recent past. While the business stated in January that it would cancel NFT tests if they were perceived by players to be a money grab, it also hinted that they may be included as part of its "Super Game" architecture in the future.
