In the clear and present danger of Russia's military destroying Ukraine's architectural marvels, museums, and other cultural sites, Michael Chobanian, President of the Blockchain Association of Ukraine, said at Consensus 2022 on Saturday that Ukraine plans to digitize "every single piece of art or history" it can.
Chobanian said, "Today, we're announcing a new project to save the Ukrainian people's DNA, their culture, and their history." "They are bombing museums, churches, and other places of cultural significance right now. So, before they are destroyed, we are going to digitize every single piece of art or history we have in museums. We'll NFT it and put it on the blockchain, "Chobanian said.
Analytics firm Crystal Blockchain told CoinDesk that Ukraine has already used cryptocurrency and blockchain to pay for its defense against Russia's invasion. By mid-May, the country had raised more than $135 million in cryptocurrency from donors all over the world.
Chobanian announced the NFT plan at a panel called "Crypto at War: Behind Ukraine's Historic Crypto Fundraiser." Alex Bornyakov, Ukraine's deputy minister in the Ministry of Digital Transformation and the government's de facto crypto spokesperson, was on the panel with him.
But the project is not being done by the government. Instead, it is being done by the blockchain community in Ukraine.
Illia Polosukhin, the co-founder of NEAR Protocol, was also on stage. Later, he said that NEAR will be the project's first blockchain partner.
Polosukhin said, "It is very important to put all of Ukraine's heritage on a chain, offer it to the world, and keep it safe for all time."
Chobanian added that the historic NFT-ization of Ukraine's artifacts will also show "what is being held" where, so that corrupt government officials won't be able to steal things in unpredictable times like these.
Digitizing an artifact and putting it on a blockchain as an NFT will prove that it existed. The goal of the project is to create a digital window into Ukraine's cultural history by putting all of the NFTs in one place where anyone can see them.
"It's a national project, not a private project. We do it as the Blockchain Association of Ukraine, so no one can delete it," said Chobanian, who also runs the Crypto Fund of Ukraine and started the Kuna exchange in Ukraine.
The Ukraine's MetaHistory NFT Museum was the first government NFT project. It was made to keep facts about the war in order to fight "Putin's disinformation campaign." The latest NFT preservation project will be paid for with NFTs bought on that platform.
