Chelsea Manning: "I'm Trying to Put the Cryptography Back in Crypto"

AUSTIN, Texas - Although Chelsea Manning, the former whistleblower turned security consultant, maintains a degree of skepticism towards cryptocurrencies, she has recently become involved with a privacy-oriented token called Nym. In fact, Manning expresses a fascination with the cryptographic aspects of the cryptocurrency industry.

"I'm trying to put the cryptography back in crypto," Manning, the former U.S. Army private who spent seven years in prison for one of the largest leaks of documents in military history, said Thursday at Consensus 2023 here. She added that she is "skeptical of speculative assets in general. This goes for both fiat as well as digital."

Expanding on the notion of advocating for privacy, Manning contended that the fundamental framework of the internet, which is over fifty years old, is inadequate for safeguarding sensitive information. According to her, privacy must not be an afterthought that is simply added onto the current internet architecture, but rather a critical element that is integrated from the outset.
