Inner City Press reported that a federal judge sentenced a British man to five years in prison for his involvement in an intricate Twitter hacking scheme and a separate SIM-swapping scam related to cryptocurrencies. The man managed to amass a staggering $900,000 through these illicit activities.
Judge Jed Rakoff emphasized the profound impact of Joseph O'Connor's actions on individuals' lives during the sentencing held on Friday at the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.
O'Connor, popularly known as PlugWalkJoe on social media, orchestrated a highly impactful Twitter breach in 2020. He successfully seized control of prominent accounts on the platform, including CoinDesk, and employed them to propagate a fraudulent bitcoin giveaway scheme. This cunning endeavor enabled him to amass an impressive sum of $103,960.
O'Connor admitted his involvement in SIM-swapping attacks directed at prominent cryptocurrency industry leaders, which led to the theft of digital currencies valued at $794,000.
After managing to elude authorities for a year, the hacker was finally apprehended in Spain in 2021. He has already served 28 months of his sentence, leaving him with a remaining term of just under three years.
