There are 8 identical coins.One of these coins is counterfeit and is known to be lighter than the genuine coins. What is the minimum number of weightings needed to identify the fake coin with a two-pan balance scale without weights?

Select two groups of three coins each from the given coins and put them on the opposite cups of the scale. If they weigh the same, the fake is among the remaining two coins, and weighing these two coins will identify the lighter fake. If the first weighing does not yield a balance, the lighter fake is among the three lighter coins. Take any two of them and put them on the opposite cups of the scale. If they weigh the same, it is the third coin in the lighter group that is fake; if they do not weigh the same, the lighter one is the fake.Thus we can identify the fake coin in only two weighings.

8-Coin Puzzle with 15 Pieces is the third mission of Lethal Lava Land in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS. The mission involves collecting the course's eight Red Coins.

All eight of the course's Red Coins are located on the Bowser puzzle platforms. From the start of the level, the player has to take the two left paths and continue onward until they reach the puzzle. The puzzle platforms are constantly sliding around, forming and unforming the image of Bowser on the puzzle. The player has to collect the eight Red Coins on these moving platforms. Upon the player doing so, the Power Star will appear at the nearby Star Marker.

The basic idea would be to compare each possible pair of coins using balance. Total number of coin pairs = 8C2 = (8 x 7)/2 = 28. So in the worst case, we need to perform 28 comparisons to get the fake coin. The critical question is: can we improve the solution and find the fake coin in fewer comparisons? Let's think further!

Since the question asks us to find the penny that weighs the least in less than 3 steps, that means that we will need to find the lightest penny in either 1 or 2 steps.

So, let’s think of finding the answer to this in 1 step: Really, the only thing we can do is compare 2 pennies on the scale and if one is lighter than the other than we know that it is the lightest. But, we would have to be lucky enough to pick the lightest penny to compare, and there’s no way we can do this without just getting plain lucky. So, there’s also no way we can do this in 1 step.
